Champion System Athlete Matty Reed Wins the 2011 Lifetime Minneapolis Triathlon. Greg Bennett Finishes 3rd!
Cameron Dye and Andy Potts came out of the water together with Potts edging out Dye by two seconds for the fastest swim. Filip Ospalay was first to hunt them down, putting time into the super swimmers on the bike. A chase pack of Matt Reed, Brian Lavelle, and Eric Limkemann followed closely behind. By the second half of the bike, Dye had put 15 seconds on Potts, with Osplay 55 seconds back and Potts in hot pursuit. But Matt Reed threw down the hammer on the last miles of the bike, leading Dye and everyone else into T2. Then Reed ran for his life. Getting chased by speedsters like Dye, Bennett and Potts will do that to a guy. Reed held onto his lead to finish first today, making him a three-time champ, followed by Potts and Bennett.

Champion System Athlete Laura Bennett Featured in USAT News!

The past week has been a whirlwind for USA Triathlon National Team member and 2008 Olympian Laura Bennett. After placing a strong sixth in the opening event of the 2011 ITU World Championship Series in Sydney, Laura and her husband — newly minted U.S. athlete Greg Bennett — relocated to their home in Boulder, Colo., after training in Australia for five months. USA Triathlon caught up with Bennett after getting settled back in the U.S.
USA Triathlon: Did you have any goals entering the race in Sydney? Were you satisfied with your performance in your first race of the year?
Laura Bennett: My goal for Sydney was a strong, consistent race. I ended up feeling quite good on the day, so I pushed the pace as much as I could. I was really disappointed to not be able to get the result I believe I was capable of given my feeling on the day due to the helmet violation, but otherwise I was pleased to kick off the season with this solid result.

“I am excited to join the Champion System family,” Reed said, “Their uniform is fast and quality and I am excited to take the starting line in it. With the variety of distances I race, I like the idea of multiple styles and designs.”
Reed, who represented the USA at the 2008 Olympic Games, made his Ironman debut at Ironman Arizona last November. Reed has stated he will target the World Championships 70.3 with the new course and will look to make his Ironman Kona debut this season.

Champion System Athlete Pat Evoe feature interview at slowtwitch.com

Austin Pro triathlete Patrick Evoe gets interesting words of encouragement when he is racing, and most of them have nothing to do with his name or place of residence. They are usually related to his sponsor Little Caesar's, but there is more to Patrick Evoe than Pizza, Pizza.
Slowtwitch: Word has it that you just had fun at the dentist. Is that correct?
Patrick: I would agree only if you have a pretty liberal interpretation of the word “fun.” I had 5 wisdom teeth removed in surgery last week, only a day after I came back from Ironman Cozumel. I needed to have them out, so I scheduled the surgery to coincide with the race recovery to get it out of the way. After a few days on the couch now, I can say with confidence that I'm officially tired of Jello, applesauce, yogurt, and pudding. I didn't plan on cutting weight this off-season!!

Expert: Triathlete & Team Continuum coach John Hirsch
Question from: Rolando Ricardez (@R_Ricardez)
Q: As a beginner triathlete I have been spending quite some time on my bike. I wonder whether cycling helps me with my running. My question is: is cycling going to make me a slower or a faster runner? Are the muscles used in cycling completely different from those used in running? Or are they complementary? Should I spend less time on the bike as I prepare for a marathon or is it ok for me to cycle on cross-training days?
A: For most novice endurance sports athletes, doing more of anything helps with everything. If you are cycling more than before you started any endurance sports, you are likely to see fitness gains and that will translate over to running. Because cycling is low impact, you will remain injury free while building your fitness, which is very important as many new runners find themselves doing too much too fast and getting hurt. The muscles used are not exactly the same, nor is the movement, so at some point, there are diminished returns.
